Hello to everyone in Nashwauk. We lived with my grandparents Dominic and Angela Sarago on Third St., whenever my Dad was oversea's with the Coast Guard. My Aunt, Tona Dasovich still lives in Nashwauk and I speak with her frequently. My Mother is Victoria Sarago Bennett. She is 86 and in very poor health. I hear Nashwauk is celebrating their 100th Anniversary next summer. My husband and I plan to attend. I have so many wonderful memories about Nashwauk and the wonderful people who lived there. It was a great way to start you life in a little town that had a great work ethic, family values and lots of friends. I have lived in Southern Michigan for 31 years, and really love Mich. We have two children and three granddaughters. Mike and I will celebrate our 35th Anniv. this year. Whew, where does the time go? Clarice Bennett Killian

Only spent my last two HS years in Nashwauk, but still have fond memories. Having lived in Goodland, it seems my strongest memory is of Officer Burns! Go figure! Closing of the mines drove my family and I to Georgia, but Northern Minnesota is always on my mind. It is nice to be able to see this website as a reminder of what I left behind. I see that Nashwauk has progressed with the rest of the world, but I still choose to remember the way things were. Keep up the work on the site, and I hope to see some familiar faces at the Centennial Celebration! Hello to everyone from "Goodcow."

Hello and Happy 4th Nashwauk----It has been awhile - just thought I would check in and see how things are going in the best Hometown anyone could ever come from. I'm sure by now there are a lot of you enjoying the street dance on a wonderful summer evening and/or preparing for the big day tomorrow. Did some reminiscing with my family today about the time I came back home when they were still young enough to appreciate dressing up and marching in the parade. They have a wonderful Nashwauk memory. I'm trying to talk them into coming back there again - this time with their kids. Because, after all, Nashwauk is the come back place of the world. Class of 59 - if any of you are reading this - how about a note from you. I hope to get back there next summer for the BIG celebration. By the way - I am interested in finding out if anyone knows of or how to go about renting a cabin on Swan Lake for the week of the Centenniel. Enjoy your wonderful 4th and make some new memories - all of you - young, old and really old - Memories can be made anytime you wish! Have a Happy and Safe 4th Nashwauk....Always, Patsy "Forss" Partain -

This nut didn't fall to far from the tree living just up the Range in Aurora. Still miss home though. I visit Greg at his office on occasion. It's interesting to see Nashwauks' business district migrate from downtown towards the traffic on the freeway ........ the modern way even in Northern MN. New homes .... new business's and still growing, Nashwauk never gives up...I love it.

Hi, the lunch bunch that meets in the Twin Cities area every third Wednesday of every month is changing locations as the restaurant that we have been meeting at has gone out of business. The new location is the Kelly Inn that is located near the State Capitol in Saint Paul. The address is 161 St. Anthony Avenue, and their phone number is 651-227-1698. The usual cost of the lunch is about $10.00 which includes the beverage (non-alcoholic) and tip. Everyone that attends has a great time visiting, so all from the Nashwauk and surrounding area are welcome, and we start at noon. If you attend, a good time is guaranteed.

Hello to my friends, family and all who live in my wonderful home town. I felt the need to drop a line and express my feelings and hopes during this trying time in our wonderful country. We are all so lucky to be living in a country where we are free to write these letters and free to express our thoughts. We all are feeling the horrible pain and loss of September 11th.. Who would have ever thought that it would happen in our backyard? My heart aches each time I see a picture or read an article or hear the president speak about those events. And I'm sure that you are all feeling this way too. I want you all to know that you are not only living in the GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD but you are also living in the GREATEST HOMETOWN anyone could ever ask for. My prayer for all of you is that God watches over you and your families and that forever GOD will BLESS AMERICA! Looking forward to seeing you in 2003 for the big celebration.

Hello everyone! I just thought I'd say "hi" and let you know that my wife and I have enjoyed getting to know folks in the Nashwauk area for the past year. We purchased 30 acres of land NE of Buck Lake about a year ago, and have spent roughly 4-5 days per month working to improve our new property since the snow melted this past spring. I spend most of my days in front of a computer screen, so it is incredibly fun to get up north and chop wood, repair one of our out-buildings and generally clean up things outdoors. While we're not "locals", we have enjoyed having Nashwauk become our "home away from home". Being from Saint Paul, it's great to get away once or twice a month and enjoy all the trees, water and stars. We also have enjoyed spending quite a bit of time at your local restaurants! :) Anyway, it's good to at least be able to get to know the area a little better, and we look forward to many years of quiet relaxation at our cabin. By the way haven't seen the usual 4th of July posts here. Someone must have something to contribute. Anything big or small is what makes reading the guestbook interesting. What about the people who participated in the alumni band putting down their thoughts about the 4th. The Eastern Itascan failed to mention all who marched with the alumni band and I am sure that people at home and from afar would like to hear all about marching this year. So let's see some news about seeing old friends and does anybody "play" as well as they did in high school? Or maybe even better? At least they didn't make you wear those "fashionable" uniforms of days past. That's if they still fit! So here is waiting for some intersting posts to read and enjoy.

Happy 4th of July to all of you wonderful Nashwaukians! Just dropping by to let you know that I'm with you in spirit today as you celebrate our nation's birthday. There is no better place than Nashwauk to celebrate this special day. By now you have paraded through town and the alumni band has done their very best (again) and the kids on decorated bikes or pulling dogs in decorated wagons have won their prizes, you've had a delicious bbq sandwich at one of the street booths along with a nice cold brew, you've probably run in a race or two and played a game of baseball - danced in the street to some great music and most of all, met with friends, old and new, in the street and in the local hangouts. I hope that some of you remembered me in your visits and that I gave you some pleasant memories. I'm sure the fireworks last night were fantastic - they always were! Enjoy what is left of this holiday and remember always how precious your freedom is. AND to all my friends and relatives back home - I HOPE YOU DANCE!!!!!!!! You can always drop me a line at - I would love to hear from anyone - Home town friends are friends forever!!!!!!!!

People from Nashwauk meet for lunch and a wonderful time every third Wednesday of every month at the Venetian Inn, 2814 Rice Street in Little Canada. Little Canada should not be confused with Big Canada as Big Canada is north of Nashwauk and Little Canada is south of Nashwauk. Actulally, it is a suburb of St. Paul. If you live around the Twin Cities or are visiting the Twin Cities, come and break bread with us. We meet at noon. I guarantee a good time. Alan Stone

Dropping in this Memorial Day weekend to say Hello to my hometown and to ask all of you who read this to take a minute out of your weekend plans and think about those who gave their lives for their country. Remember all of the men and women who served this country in every war - The next time you see the American Flag - take a good look at it and remember why it flys so proudly over America. If you meet someone on the street that is serving our country or served our country in past years, stop and shake their hand. Let them know that you are proud of them and what they stand for. We have been truly blessed with a wonderful gift called FREEDOM - Make it last! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday!

Just found out about the web site Nashwauk has. Glad to know its there. Have enjoyed looking at the pictures on the home site-brought back lots of memories. Reading the guest book was a true enjoyment! A lot of names I knew and remembered. There is no other place that celebrates July 4th like Nashwauk does. I do miss that! Its been ten years since I was there last. Left in 1977 to visit mom in FL and ended up staying. Met my wife here and we've been married since 1979. Have to great children, Tim 21 and Amy 19. I love Lake City, but I miss Nashwauk! I miss playing hockey. Would love to hear from any of you who remember me. Please write!

Hi, I'm not sure how I ended up here in my genealogical endeavors, but would greatly welcome hearing from anyone with my surname to help me find my "roots." Grandfather is Henry Kautto (1872-1947) and Grandmother is Karin A. Soderholm Kautto (1879-1953). They lived on a homestead up Schooner Creek, near Rose Lodge and Taft (now Lincoln City), Oregon. Their four children were Helen (1905-1987), Anshelm Alstedd (1906-1987), Helga (1910-1974), and Walton (1911-1981). Thank you.

Hello Nashwauk - this is certainly a long overdue thank you note - For some reason my home computer is not letting me submit a message so I am doing this from work - taking a short break from the everyday &(%(%$&%@#. It was so great to be home over the 4th and see so many friends and relatives. Those of you that took the time to show up at the all class reunion - thanks so much - I'm just sorry that I didn't get a chance to visit with each and every one like I would have liked to. There was just way too much going on and so many wonderful people to talk with. Class of 59 I seriously think we need to start working on a reunion for just our class - I think that's going to be the only way that we'll be able to get together and enjoy each other's company. I'll see if we can get something going during the big 2002 celebration or is it 2003? ANYWAY - all of you citizens of Nashwauk have a lot to be proud of. It was such a treat to drive into town from Pengilly through the newly changed entrance -It really looked wonderful. It was wonderful to see so many homes decorated for the holiday and the beautiful flowers along the streets. The town looked so clean - it is truly a hometown to be proud of. I enjoyed the entire 3 day celebration from the delicious breakfast served by those wonderful Masons and cooked by those fantastic Knights of Columbus- It was such fun - to the Grand Parade - wow I think every vehicle in Minn. was there. Ha! The City is sure lucky to have such a great Rescue,Fire and Police Department. So much fun going to a parade where the kids still decorate their tricycles and dress up their dogs and push them in baby carriages. You just don't see that in the Rose Bowl Parade. Ha! I think I cried through the whole thing. Nashwauk-Keewatin Old timers band -you were wonderful -Saw the new water tower going up in front of my old home (5 3rd Street - also saw that they were doing remodeling to the outside of the house) It's gonna seem strange to have that tower at the top of 3rd instead of behind. I have a great picture though, of our home with the old tower - At least I can always have the memory. Want any of you who are interested that their is a great website called that is sure fun to go into and look around. I've found a few old friends there and maybe you will too. Well - I guess it's time to bring this to an end and get back to work To all of my friends that I saw or that I missed seeing - I think of you all often - Nashwauk is in my heart forever! Hope to see you again soon - but until then - if anyone cares to drop me a line - my email is - Come on Nashwauk - drop a note! "I HOPE YOU DANCE"

once again i have to commend nashwauk on a wonderful fourth of july celebration. i enjoyed the parade and the fire works tremendously. My family always picnics in the park after the parade as we grew up there when it was LaRue Location. We had the op- portunity to participate in the water keg fights this year with a team of four, ken, me, denise and stephanie. what a blast... literally! we are already formulating our team for next year! thanks steph for joining us, even though we did lose. i had knee surgery prior to the fight, so i'd say we did pretty well, considering. I had hoped more people would have been at the rec center from the class of 74, but oh well, i showed up anyway, to find an empty table! saw pete marinaro in the parking lot, but that's all. anyway, have a great year and see you at the water fights next year ! Gary said he might be on our team. Not to count you out stephanie!!

I would like to compliment you on an excellent guestbook. I am originally from Virginia, MN; taught and coached in Buhl (Arrowhead Conference Champs the last year I was there. George Smilanich was head coach I was his only assistant). The point I wanted to make however is simply that your page is so positive and upbeat compared to Virginia's. On their page, there is a tendency by some to put others down and of course nobody signs their name or gives an email address, that way it is easier to be insulting or rude or crude or whatever. It sounds, by the comments, that Nashwauk was a healthy, happy place to grow up in. More power to you!

I was going through the photographs and found the one of the mighty Nashwauk Blackhawk hockey team. Shoveling snow, flooding the rink, skating in sub-zero weather, and enen winning a game or two. Our great coach, Tony Martire, a great guy. I bet no one wears the same size belt or goes to the barber as often.

Enjoyed your site. My mother, Pearl Atkinson, lived in Nashwauk 1910 - 1920. She lived with her aunt & uncle, Adeline & Archie McWilliams. I lived in nashwauk part of my life. i give it a 2 outta 10.rating. there is little to no diversity, as well as no acceptance of anything that isn't of the norm. it dwells TOO much on the fact that it offers *decent* 4th of July festivities. the small town mentality is the wekest link in its chain. i pity the teens and 20-somethings and the nothingness they have to look forward to.

Dear Nashwauk, Here I am once again - just couldn't let this century pass without one last note! I think it's wonderful that we are able to live in two different centuries and be able to pass the best of both worlds on to our families. I have really been busy emailing all the many friends that I have reconnected with since my last note! There are still a lot of you out there - Class of 59 - that I haven't heard from - May I say to all of you my dear friends - May 2000 be kind to you and yours and I hope to see you in the summer of the new century! I grew up in Hibbing and had a Aunts and a Uncle that lived in Nashwauk. Can't remember the street but they lived behind the community center on main street fourth house on the right hand side. No one will remember them but they are Kitty Ryan who was the school libarian for years and Mr. and Mrs. McCoulgh. They also had a cabin on Buck Lake that we spent endless summer days at. Love looking up "The Range". There is no place like home or the memories of growing up in such a wonderful area. Best of luck to all.

Ahhh!! This site brings back a lot of memories as I grew up in Nashwauk and left many good friends behind when we moved to Texas. Seeing the pit reminds me of us kids sneaking through the fence going exploring and swimming in the many different places around there. Do any of you remember LOST LAKE?? Yes, i even remember attending both schools. I think I even have a brick or 2 from the old school. I sure do miss it up there who knows someday I might get the chance to get back up that way. Its to bad that there aren't very many jobs in that area. I would move back in a heart beat given the opportunity. Merry chistmas to all. Mike Linderman. P.S. This was such a wonderful page to stumble into! In about 6 months my husband and I are moving to a home outside of Nashwauk, and I have been trying to find out everything I can about the area. I grew up in Moorhead and always vacationed in Itasca County, so I am very excited to be moving there. Nashwauk sounds like a wonderful town for our kids (4 & 7) to call home. Colorado is nice too, but there is just something about Northern Minnesota that is drawing me back.

Haven't made the 4th for several years. . .too much "stuff" going on in our lives. I miss Nashwauk, as I remember it. Even my "not so great" memories are great!! In retrospect, at least. Everytime we drive through Cooley, I try to "see" where the store was; but can't for the life of me! Congratulations to the authors..another reminder of the vitality of the good old home town. I gradated in '49 and have so many fond memories of growing up in the area. My husband's brain surgery was successful. The surgeon removed a very large meningioma on Friday the 13th of August. Three is obviously a very lucky number for us. We are home and doing well. Everything works and he is talking about going to work (nien) He still gets tired and needs to wear a foot brace because of nerve damage during surgery. We are assured that the foot drop will improve in 1 to 6 weeks. I plan to do a little private duty nursing at home and return to the other world of work next week. Mary Rose

Hi everyone, This is just great having a Nashwauk webpage. It's awesome infact. I had heard about it through Mary McColl Hansen (we work together) and then tonite Carolyn Weldon Gangle sent it to me. Thanks Carolyn. My class of 1960 is having a get-together next July - around the 4th. If someone hasn't already heard from me, please contact me for the details. Patsy it was good to read your comments. I've always wondered if I'd get to talk to you somehow - Keep in touch.

It was a pleasure to find this web site - benefit of my sister,Carolyn. I have been able to email Pat Forss Partain and JuLee Ferraro Johnston and I have kept in touch all of these years. We did get to Nashwauk for the 4th of July parade and visited with Julee and my family. I have not heard of Joan LeClair since 1963; if anyone has her address, I would love to have it. We hope to get to Nashwauk for another 4th soon. - Mary Rose

Aug. 2, 1999 Enjoy reading all the visitors on your home page. We used to visit Pengilly every year from 1983 to 1989 with our 32 ft trailer on Swan Lake-- At Margaret Roberts place . We have lots and lots of wonderful memories of Swan Lake. All the fishing we enjoyed and the hospitality at Roberts. We in Oroville, California are experiencing Northern Pike problems at Lake Davis. A part of the Feather River Chain . The Oroville Dam is a salmon, bass and croppie lake. We enjoyed every Northern we caught at Swan Lake and O'brien Lake. Getting the y bone out was the trick and we did. Someone in Keewatin by the name of Minnie and Jiggs Dejarlais was another frequent friend that visited us. Margaret Roberts where are you?

Another GREAT Fourth of July! At least the rain stopped long enough for us to enjoy the day. The alumni band had more players than last year! (30 something) Lets go for 50 for the year 2000. As always Nashwauk knows how to put on a Fourth of July Celebration. Those fireworks, oh. , awe. !! Hope to See you next year!!

Just wanted to take a minute and again commend the organizers on another great July 4th celebration. Bar none...our July 4th is the BEST! Joe Marter, my dad, also wants to send his thanks to the organizers of the class reunions that he attended. He so enjoys visiting with his students...a good time was had by all. Thanks again!

I really enjoyed visiting Nashwauk's Web page. As a Nashwauk resident and business owner, I am glad to see the city is keeping up with technology. It is also very interesting to know the history of the city.

Happy 4th of July Nashwauk! Nobody does it better! My sister(MaryAnn Dukich) and I were just reminiscing about the good ole days and the wonderful 4th of July memories. The parade always lined up in front of our house on 3rd street. As a youngster I had to eat a bowl of oatmeal - before I could hit the streets for the day! Anyone could march in the parade and earn tickets to spend at all of the stands all day long - Tickets were given for all sorts of categories and also for the races and events. My parents would let me free on the town for cotton candy, ice cream, popcorn, hot dogs, whatever - Just as long as I had the oatmeal first. To this day - I love oatmeal - it has become one of those psychological "feel good" foods that has a fond memory attached to it. I see that Thom Coughlin has signed the book a couple of times - Hey Tommy - I used to baby sit you when you lived next door to us - I'm Anna Forss's daughter! I will email you later! Hope everyone has a bang-up time this Holiday weekend. You will definitely be on my mind! Anyone from class of 59 - How about dropping a note! Thanks Donnie Ricker - great hearing from you! My sister and I would also like to hear from anyone who might have an address for any of the Markovich girls. We were really saddened when we heard of the death of Mike, George and Dusty all in such a short time. They lived just down the hill from us and we would like to send a note to the family! Well - time to light up those Fireworks! Have a good one - NASHWAUK FOREVER!

Greetings from an alumni of class of 1965. Have a great Fourth of July Iron Rangers and Spartans. Brentwood will be having its annual CornFest Festival. There will be plenty of sweet corn, both yellow and white varieties. Lots of fireworks in the evening as well. Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer.--David Kallio, formerly of Keewatin.
