Conversations about Church and Faith |
Conversations
about Church & Faith The mission statement that we use in our bulletin on Sundays
says, “Carmel Lutheran Church gathers for worship, fellowship, service, and
growing together in Christ. It seeks to welcome a growing community of
disciples of Jesus Christ who nurture one another in friendship and in
Christ-centered faith.” The mission
statement of the ELCA, which we also print in our bulletins says, “Marked with the
cross of Christ forever, we are claimed, gathered, and sent for the sake of
the world.” As new members join our congregation, I try to
have conversation about what it means to be a part of Carmel Lutheran
Church. We are on the one hand a
local gathering of the church, but we also share membership in a larger
church. Carmel is part of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Which is one of several denominations of Lutherans, and Lutherans
are one of many denominations of Christians.
It’s sometimes confusing to understand how all these relate to each
other and to the faith in Christ that we hold together. Thursday, September 2nd 7 PM I will
have a session at church to have some conversation about church membership
and faith. People who are joining or
have recently joined our congregation are especially encouraged to come for
this conversation, but anyone who is interested in leaning more about these
things is more than welcome. |
Anniversary
Planning Meeting In 2005, Carmel will celebrate 25 years since
it reorganization in 1980. It will be
a time to remember our past and look forward to the future. A planning meeting has been set for
Tuesday, August 24th at 7:00 pm at the church. Several people volunteered to help with
this at the annual meeting; these and anyone interested in helping plan for
this are welcome to come for this meeting.
Cursillo
Weekends A number of our members have attended a “Via
de Cristo” or “Cursillo” weekend. Via
de Cristo is a Spanish phrase meaning “Way of Christ.” Via de Cristo is a
highly structured three-day weekend designed to strengthen and renew the
faith of Christian people and bring them to a new awareness of living in
God's grace. It is a combined effort of lay people and clergy toward renewal
of the church. Zion in Grand Rapids is hosting “Via de
Cristo” weekends at the end of September and beginning of October. The men’s weekend is Sept. 23-26, the
women’s weekend is Sept. 30-Oct. 3.
If you are interested in attending one of these weekends, talk to the
pastors. These weekends are truly
inspirational and well worth the time.
Carmel’s
budget for 2004 is $33,000. To meet
this budget we need an average weekly offering of $538. The above figures do not include designated giving. |
